There are some evenings in Freemasonry that feel a little different from the moment the meeting begins – occasions where you sense that something special is about to unfold.
Tonight was one of those nights.
After 63 years in Freemasonry, Michael Cutts finally took the next step in his Masonic voyage, being Exalted into the Royal Arch.
For many years, the Companions had gently encouraged Michael to complete his journey in Pure Antient Masonry, and after more than half a century of friendly persuasion, we finally managed to help him step aboard and complete that voyage.
The ceremony itself was delivered with great care and dignity. Under the steady hand of Steve Angus, First Principal, the Chapter was expertly guided through the evening, while Ian Cockings, Principal Sojourner, carried out his role with distinction, skilfully leading Michael through the ceremony and safely bringing him into the Royal Arch.
It was a wonderful evening filled with warmth, friendship, and a genuine sense of occasion. To witness a Brother who has given so many years of service to Freemasonry take this important step was a privilege for everyone present.
Freemasonry is often described as a journey – and tonight was a perfect reminder that some journeys are measured not in miles, but in decades. Like a mariner who has travelled long and faithfully under familiar stars, Michael has spent many years navigating the seas of Craft Masonry before finally dropping anchor in the Royal Arch.
Moments like this remind us that Freemasonry is not simply about meetings and ritual. It is about encouragement, companionship, and lifelong friendships that accompany us along the way.
After more than six decades of dedication, it was fitting that Michael should finally complete this important stage of his Masonic voyage.

Congratulations, Companion Michael Cutts.
A night that will be remembered by all who were present – and a fine reminder that it is never too late to continue the journey.
