Provincial Grand Master & Provincial Grand Superintendent

Ian Craigs

Ian Craigs has been our Provincial Grand Master since 2014. He is responsible for leading the province, supported by the other members of our Senior Executive. During his tenure, Ian has encouraged wider participation of our membership in developing the province, focusing on attracting new members to the Craft and the Chapter.

Professionally, Ian is a Farmer in Northumberland, which occupies most of his time outside Freemasonry.

Deputy Provincial Grand Master

Kevin Stannard

Kevin is our Deputy Provincial Grand Master. Kevin also chairs the Futures Group, a standing committee of the Province established in 2022 to develop long-term plans for the future of Freemasonry in Northumberland.

Kevin s a retired Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon from the Royal Victoria Infirmary. When not engaged in masonic activities, he continues to pursue his other main interest of building and flying radio-controlled model aircraft .... when he's not traipsing all over the fields around Ovington, walking Emmie, his hyperactive Irish Setter!

Assistant Provincial Grand Master

Dr Gregory Smith

Greg has Provincial Executive responsibilities for the Members’ Pathway, Mentoring, and University scheme Lodges throughout the Province.

Greg served as an Army Officer for many years, serving around the world in war zones and peace keeping activities. He also served as an Inspector of Education (HMI) for the Office for standards in Education, (Ofsted) and the Adult Learning Inspectorate (ALI) Greg has worked in many education establishments in senior management in the UK. Greg was Vice Principal at the largest Further and Higher Education College in the UK.

Assistant Provincial Grand Master

Alasdair Watson

Alasdair is one of our Assistant Provincial Grand Masters. He is the chair of Teddies for Loving Care Northumberland and as such is responsible for leading the development of TLC giving in our Lodges across the Province as well as the implementation of the Military Covenant.

Professionally, Alasdair is a Solicitor of the Higher Courts - until Covid he mainly defended all types of criminal cases from shoplifting through to rape and murder. He served with 7th Bn The Light Infantry and at 15 Infantry Brigade, including time as an Intelligence Officer, as a Russian speaker.

Apart from Freemasonry, Alasdair enjoys reading, computer games, gardening and, when he can find a partner, dancing, both Ballroom and Latin to IDTA exam standards.

Assistant Provincial Grand Master

George Sanger

George Sanger in an Assistant Provincial Grand Master where his primary executive role is head of Communications for the Province. George works closely with Nick Deakin; the Provincial Communications Officer and members of the executive team to deliver our communications strategy across all our social media platforms and external public relations outlets.

George has recently retired after a successful 40 year career in the IT sector, where he is a Chartered IT Professional and a Member of the British Computer Society.

George enjoys playing the guitar, golf, walking and collecting vintage diecast models. He is also keen wildlife and military aviation photographer with several published articles.

Assistant Provincial Grand Master

Gordon Craigs

As one of the Assistant Provincial Grand Masters, Gordon leads on Learning and Development by promoting Solomon, the online resource, as well as helping brethren fulfil their lodge roles such as Treasurer, Almoner etc. He is particularly looking forward helping with the roll-out of Hermes.

As Deputy Grand Superintendent, he assists the Grand Superintendent in promoting the Chapter and encouraging Chapters to make the ceremonies enjoyable for candidates and members. In addition, he is also keen to help Companions understand the meaning behind the ritual.

Gordon is married with two children and two grandsons. He is an Environmental Health Officer presently working as a Food Safety Consultant. His hobbies outside freemasonry include an interest in all things mechanical, gardening and driving his MGB.

Provincial Grand Secretary

Stuart Cairns

Stuart is our Provincial Grand Secretary and Grand Scribe E. Operating from the Provincial Office in Gosforth his responsibilities are to provide a secretarial support and service to the Craft Lodges and Royal Arch Chapters and individual members in the Province. Also, to deal with any administration formalities with United Grand Lodge & Supreme Grand Chapter. He works closely with the Provincial Grand Master / Grand Superintendent and his Senior Executive to manage the affairs of the Province.

Professionally, Stuart is a Retired Commercial Manager of one of our High Street Banks. A former Football Referee he now enjoys coast and country walking around his home town of Alnwick.

Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies

David Armstrong

David is responsible for all matters of ritual, protocol, ceremony and procedures in the Province of Northumberland, assisted by two Deputy and four Assistant Directors of Ceremony.

He is a retired FMCG sales manager, having spent most of his working life selling food products to major supermarkets. As pastimes, he enjoys studying local history, spending time at his remote cottage in Northumberland, hill walking and rebuilding a vintage Morgan Sports Car.

Provincial Grand Chaplain

Leslie Dinning

Leslie has been our Provincial Grand Chaplain for many years. He was Deputy Provincial Grand Chaplain serving under the then Chaplain, The Rev Alan Pyle, from whom he learned so much about the role of Chaplain in the Province. The Chaplain's role involves attending Lodge anniversaries, offering orations and leading in acts of thanksgiving, banner dedications and other celebrations. The Chaplain also offers pastoral and Spiritual Support for the Brethren when needed.

Leslie worked in the N.H.S for over 40 years. First as a Nurse working in care of the elderly and for over 20 years as a chaplain in the Mental Health Trust. He is now retired and enjoys the discipline of preparation for Masonic events. He is a keen gardener[Mainly vegetables] and has been for many years standing, secretary of the local Flower and Vegetable Show and has won a prize or two over the years.

Mike Gilberg

Provincial Grand Treasurer

Mike Gilberg

Mike is our Provincial Grand Treasurer. He oversees the finances of Provincial Grand Lodge and Richard Henry Holmes Masonic Benevolent Fund. He is also a Trustee of Northumberland Masonic Charity Association.

Mike is a Chartered Secretary and is now semi-retired, having previously held senior financial positions with several local companies. In his spare time, Mike enjoys puzzle-solving and plays steel pan as a member of North Tyneside Steelband and KEVI Steel. He has recently become a grandfather.

Provincial Grand Almoner

Norman West

Norman supports our members, their families and dependants in time of need, guiding them through the process of applying to the Masonic Charitable Foundation (MCF) or other agencies who can help individuals when going through challenging times. He also supports Lodge Almoners across the Province.

Outside of Freemasonry, Norman is now retired and enjoys, gardening and small DIY projects, looking after 5 grand children aged from 22 months to 15 years old and walking his 17 year old Jack Russell dog (when she in the mood!). Norman also works a special advisor for the Masonic Charitable Foundation (unpaid) on home adaption projects nationally.

Provincial Grand Charity Steward

Jeff Ormston

Jeff's core role is to work with the Provincial Executive on agreeing and implementing strategy on fundraising. He also oversees and encourages brethren in all matters relating to charity within the Province.

Professionally, Jeff is a retired Manager within the Financial Services sector, having experience in Corporate Partner Management, Project Management, Resource Planning and Database development. Outside of Freemasonry, Jeff enjoys motorcycle trips around Europe and the UK, Indian food and trying to learn Spanish.

Provincial Grand Membership Officer

Gary Breach

Gary is responsible for leading the development and implementation of attracting and engaging new members in our Province. He works closely with the Provincial Grand Mentor to implement the Members’ Pathway under the direction of Assistant Provincial Grand Master Dr Greg Smith.

In his professional life, Gary is the Managing Director of a National Commercial Cleaning Services company. Away from work, Gary enjoys spending time with his family, watching Rugby, walking his dog, playing golf and foreign travel.

Provincial Grand Mentor

David W Stockdale

David Stockdale is our Provincial Grand Mentor. David is responsible for leading the development and implementation of mentoring in our Lodges across the Province. He works closely with the Provincial Grand Membership Officer to implement the Members’ Pathway under the direction of Assistant Provincial Grand Master Dr Greg Smith. In the Chapter, David supports the early adoption of the Archway scheme, focusing on encouraging and supporting our Craft members into the Chapter.

Professionally, David is the director of an independent national provider of social care for people with learning disabilities, complex autism, or mental health conditions. Outside of Freemasonry, David enjoys travelling to Italy, reading, playing board games, and walking his two retired Greyhounds. David is also the Trustee of a community organisation in Newcastle and a member of the charity Freedom from Torture.

Philippe Pagès

Philippe Pagès

Philippe is our Third Provincial Grand Principal. He is responsible for assisting the Provincial Grand Superintendent in maintaining and developing the Royal Arch in Northumberland.

Philippe is also the Assistant Provincial Grand Secretary in the Craft.

Paul Winship

Paul Winship

Paul Winship is our Third Provincial Grand Principal. He is responsible for assisting the Provincial Grand Superintendent in maintaining and developing the Royal Arch in Northumberland.

Paul has recently retired, having been a Director of a Financial Services business for more than 20 years. Married to Allison, his hobbies are golf, which (apparently) he plays very badly, walking (usually in search of his golf ball) and cycling.

Paul Ryder

Paul Ryder

Paul Ryder is one of the Assistants to the Provincial Grand Principals. He is responsible for facilitating communication between the Province and Chapters and also assisting the development and implementation of Chapter mentoring in our Lodges. As part of the Provincial Chapter Executive he strives to implement the Members’ Pathway, ensuring that, on being Raised as a Master Mason, Exaltation into the Royal Arch Chapter is part of the ‘complete’ Masonic journey.

Paul hails from Bradford in West Yorkshire and came to Newcastle to study. He is married to Julie, and they have one grown up daughter. Professionally he works as a Business Development Director for a London based recruitment solutions consultancy. Outside work, Paul enjoys the occasional run (which is more of a jog these days), spending time on the family allotment, walking Archie and Pippin the two-family dogs, reading, and going to concerts in a vain attempt to relive his youth. His sporting interests include supporting Bradford City Football Club.

Paul is a former Trustee of the community run Jesmond Pool and Chairperson of Jesmond Joggers Running Club, and since 2019 he has been a Street Pastor in Newcastle.

Andrew Smith

Andrew Smith

Andrew Smith is one of the Assistants to the Provincial Grand Principals. Like Paul, he is responsible for facilitating communication between the Province and Chapters and also assisting the development and implementation of Chapter mentoring in our Lodges.

Andrew is a native of Cheshire, settling in Newcastle in 1984. He is married to a ‘Geordie Lass’ and has two grown up Sons. He has worked as a Scientist for Procter & Gamble since 1988, leading Global washing appliance understanding. Outside work, he enjoys the company of 2 Black Labradors & a Golden retriever . Sporting interests are Rugby and Formula One.

Dennis Frazer

Provincial Grand Chapter Treasurer

Dennis Frazer

Dennis is responsible for collating and banking of the Provincial Annual dues, Chapter rituals and Chapter Ties; the compilation of the Annual accounts; the calculation of future expenditures inclusive of Annual meeting costs and changes to the annual subscription charges. He works closely with the Provincial Grand Scribe E. to quantify and implement any changes in expenditure and alterations to the annual subscription charge.

Although now retired, professionally, Dennis started his working life as a mechanical fitter for a large Turbine Generator manufacturer, working his way up to become the Manufacturing Estimating Controller with responsibilities for managing a team of Production Measurement Estimators who compiled manhour and material estimates for Turbine Generator Tender submissions and the Company’s manufacturing, planning, and control systems. Dennis enjoys reading and distance walking outside of freemasonry and is a keen gardener.
