Northumberland Freemasons Unite for Remembrance Day Parade and Service in Newcastle

13th November 2024

On a crisp Sunday morning, 10th November 2024, Freemasons from across Northumberland gathered in Newcastle City Centre to take part in the annual Remembrance Day Parade and Service. Like countless other communities throughout the country, brethren from various Lodges joined forces to commemorate the Fallen—those who sacrificed their lives during the two World Wars and subsequent conflicts.

Honouring the Fallen with Pride and Gratitude

Across the Province, Freemasons came together with their families, service comrades, and fellow citizens to reflect on the sacrifices made by so many. The parade in Newcastle was a poignant display of respect, gratitude, and unity. In today’s fast-paced world, where traditional values of duty, sacrifice, and patriotism are sometimes questioned, the ceremony was a powerful reminder of the importance of remembering those who gave everything for freedom.

The service not only honoured the soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice but also acknowledged the profound loss felt by their families—parents, wives, brothers, sisters, and friends. As the years pass and the number of surviving veterans dwindles, it is ever more crucial to keep their memories alive. The Freemasons of Northumberland are committed to preserving this legacy, whether through annual parades, the contemplation of memorial plaques in Lodge rooms, or their charitable endeavours.

A United Masonic Presence in Newcastle

Under the organisation of W. Bro. Darren Bolton, a former Chief Technician in the Royal Air Force and Worshipful Master of both The St Anthony’s Lodge No. 4423 and The Lodge Justice No. 4421, a contingent of Freemasons formed up at 10:10 am. Marching in step with representatives from other veterans’ organisations, they made their way to the Newcastle and District War Memorial at Old Eldon Square.

As a proud representative of Northumberland Freemasons, W. Bro. Darren took his place alongside other veterans’ associations to lay a wreath in memory of the fallen. His dedication to maintaining the bond between the Armed Services and Freemasonry was evident throughout the ceremony. The Covenant between the Province and the Armed Services remains a point of pride, reflecting the shared values of duty, honour, and service.

A Stirring Tribute and a Call for Unity

After the solemn Service of Remembrance, the parade marched past the Dias, where W. Bro. Darren commanded an ‘eyes right’ and led the salute to the assembled dignitaries. The procession then continued up Northumberland Street, accompanied by the stirring sounds of bagpipes and the warm applause of the gathered crowd.

As the parade drew to a close, the veterans’ contingent halted near the top of Northumberland Street, where W. Bro. Darren thanked the attending brethren for their support and commitment.

Looking Ahead: An Invitation for 2025

The Northumberland Freemasons extend an open invitation to all brethren to join the Masonic contingent in next year’s Remembrance Day Parade and Service in Newcastle. Whether or not you have served in the Armed Forces, your presence is a powerful show of unity and respect for those who have given so much.

Let us continue to honour their legacy, not just in words, but in deeds, ensuring their sacrifices are never forgotten.
