21st October 2024

In October this month the historic Berwick Masonic Hall celebrated a momentous occasion—its 150th anniversary, also known as its Sesquicentenary. The event was highlighted by a Rededication Ceremony led by the Provincial Grand Master (PGM) Ian Craigs, accompanied by Officers of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Northumberland.

A Historic Milestone

The Berwick Masonic Hall, which has stood proudly in Berwick-upon-Tweed since 1874, is a cornerstone of Masonic tradition and history in the area. For 150 years, it has been a hub of brotherhood, charity, and Masonic ritual. Over the decades, the hall has not only served as a meeting place for Freemasons but also as a key part of the Berwick community, hosting numerous events and activities that have contributed to the town’s history.

Rededication Ceremony

The Sesquicentenary and Rededication Ceremony was attended by distinguished guests from both England and Scotland, with Bro Stuart Robertson, the Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master of East Lothian, and other brethren of the Scottish constitution joining in the celebration.

The Provincial Grand Master and his team, including Deputy Provincial Grand Master Kevin Stannard, Assistant Provincial Grand Masters Greg Smith, John Bruce, David Armstrong, and David Southern, and Provincial Grand Chaplain Rev. Les Dinning, led the proceedings. During the ceremony, the Provincial Grand Master took the Master’s Chair, and several senior members of the Province were invited to occupy key roles.

W. Bro Alex Burgon, a Senior Past Master of the Lodge, formally requested the Provincial Grand Master to initiate the rededication of the building. The solemn ceremony, filled with Masonic tradition and reverence, was brought to life by an oration delivered by the Provincial Grand Chaplain, reflecting on the long-standing legacy and Masonic heritage of the Hall.

Celebrating 150 Years of Freemasonry

Following the ceremony, attendees, including the sixty brethren present, retired to the Black and Gold Club in Shielfield, where they enjoyed a festive meal. It was a time to reflect on the significance of the hall, the rich history it embodies, and the continued fellowship that has kept its doors open for 150 years.

This anniversary was not only a celebration of the past but a testament to the future of the Berwick Masonic Hall, which will continue to serve as a beacon of Masonic values, charity, and community for years to come.

Looking Forward

With the rededication of the hall, the Brethren of Berwick look forward to another century of Masonic work, growth, and service. The event was a reminder of the powerful impact the Masonic Hall has had on its members and the broader community, ensuring that its legacy will continue to thrive.
