A Bright Future for the Light Blues
More than 75 brethren gathered at Byker Masonic Hall last night for the inaugural Northumberland Light Blues Conference. A landmark occasion that brought together Freemasons from across the Province for an evening of connection, insight, and inspiration.
From those just starting their Masonic journey to the Provincial Executive team, the room reflected the strength and unity of the Craft in Northumberland. The evening was the result of excellent planning by Terry Christie and Gareth Marijt, with support from APGM David Armstrong, and set a confident tone for the future of the Light Blues movement in the Province.

A strong turnout of Light Blues and senior officers from across the Province gathered for an evening of insight, inspiration, and connection.
Conference Highlights
PGM Kevin Stannard opened the event, expressing his full support for the Light Blues initiative and his pride in seeing so many brethren gathered to share in its launch. His welcome set the tone for a forward-looking and inclusive evening.
APGM David Armstrong followed by outlining the Province’s vision for the Light Blues – one built on stronger engagement, clearer opportunities for development, and ongoing encouragement for newer members to get involved both in their Lodges and across the wider Province.
A highlight of the night came from W Bro Barry Longstaff, Provincial Grand Mentor from Yorkshire North and East Riding, who shared the success of their Light Blues network. His talk gave a valuable perspective on what can be achieved through sustained support and structured outreach.
Solomon Academy Launch
Bob Waddell, Provincial Learning & Development Officer, officially launched the Solomon Academy, a new online learning platform available to all Northumberland Freemasons. Bob issued a friendly challenge to the entire Provincial Executive to complete their Solomon Diplomas before the AGM in November – a proposal that was warmly received.
It was confirmed that Solomon Diploma certificates will be presented in Open Lodge by senior members of the Provincial team, recognising individual learning achievements and encouraging others to follow suit.

Opportunities for Light Blues
The evening also highlighted several ways Light Blues can become more involved:
-
Taking part in Provincial visits and parading into the Lodge before the Provincial team
-
Assisting in the delivery of Solomon Nuggets during meetings
-
Supporting Masonic learning and development within their Lodges and the wider Province
Stewards Lodge & Provincial Involvement
W Bro Darren Bolton delivered a passionate presentation about the Provincial Grand Stewards Lodge, describing it as a natural next step for brethren looking to deepen their involvement after serving as Worshipful Master. He emphasised that the rank of Provincial Steward is earned through active commitment to the Province, and membership of the Stewards Lodge follows that appointment.
He made it clear that wearing the Steward’s red apron remains a proud and meaningful experience for all those who’ve held the role – a mark of trusted service within the Province.
Freemasonry & Charity
W Bro Norman West, Provincial Grand Almoner, offered a thoughtful overview of Freemasonry’s charitable work, from its historic roots to the formation of the Masonic Charitable Foundation (MCF) in 2016. He shared how the MCF continues to support individuals and communities across Northumberland and beyond, delivering impact with compassion and professionalism.
New L&D Webpage Launched
The event also marked the launch of the new Learning & Development webpage, which serves as a central hub for updates, events, and resources. Special thanks were extended to David Kearns for his work in developing the site and for supporting the broader efforts of the Communications Team.
