The Fusiliers Museum of Northumberland, situated within a 14th century tower at Alnwick Castle, the home of Harry Potter and Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, was spellbound recently when they received a much needed grant from Northumberland Freemasons.
Welcoming in excess of 80000 visitors from around the world a year, the museum provides a contemporary presentation of Fusilier history from their origins in 1674 up to the present day. Arranged thematically, and brought to life through individual stories past and present, the museum follows a soldier’s journey from recruit to veteran. Between 2014 and 2017 the museum was completely redeveloped, with new displays throughout, thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund and the generosity of trusts, benefactors, friends and visitors.
Lesley Frater, of the museum, said “I really enjoyed hosting the signing of the Armed Forces Covenant at the Fusiliers Museum of Northumberland, and we are all extremely grateful for the most generous donation to the Museum from Freemasons Northumberland. It will provide much needed support for our Outreach and Education Officer and her team of volunteers, enabling them to bring our story to life for schools, community groups, visitors and events. Thank you.”
Ian Craigs, the Head of Northumberland Freemasons, explained “To sign the Armed Forces Covenant on behalf of Northumberland at the Fusiliers Museum at Alnwick Castle was a great privilege .A wonderful setting for which we are very grateful .The £2000 donation towards both the upkeep of the Museum and assist with providing support for outreach work and education is given with grateful thanks from all Masons in Northumberland”.
