A Lifetime of Harmony: Celebrating W. Bro. Terence Lyall Compton

24th October 2025

57 Years of Music, Friendship, and Dedication to Freemasonry

There are few Masons who bring as much warmth, character, and melody to a lodge as W. Bro. Terence (Terry) Lyall Compton. At a recent meeting of Purcell Lodge No. 4236, brethren gathered to celebrate Terry’s 57 years in Freemasonry – a milestone marked with friendship, fond memories, and plenty of harmony, in true Purcell Lodge style.

A Remarkable Masonic Journey

Terry’s Masonic journey began in 1967, shortly after graduating from King’s College, Durham University. Encouraged by family friend W. Bro. Dr Bill Hicks, he joined Achilles University Lodge No. 4078, being initiated on 13 December 1967, and passed and raised early the following year.

Work later took Terry overseas, yet he remained a faithful member of Achilles Lodge throughout his time abroad. When he returned to England, he settled in Northampton, where he built a successful business and joined Kingsley Lodge No. 2431. His enthusiasm and commitment were soon recognised, and he took the Chair as Worshipful Master in 1993.

A Life in Music

Music runs through Terry’s veins. During Kingsley Lodge’s centenary celebrations in 1992, the brethren proudly paraded into the temple to a very special composition – “The Kingsley Anthem”, written by Terry himself.

His service and dedication were acknowledged with his appointment as Past Provincial Assistant Director of Ceremonies (PProvADC) in the Province of Northampton & Huntingdonshire, and he is also a Companion of Eleanor Cross Chapter No. 1764.

A New Chapter in Northumberland

When Terry retired to Whitley Bay, he discovered that Achilles Lodge had handed in its warrant. Fate, however, had other plans. He soon learned that Purcell Lodge No. 4236, a lodge with strong family ties, was thriving – and he joined without hesitation.

Freemasonry runs deep in Terry’s family. His father’s cousin, W. Bro. Llewelyn Mozart Walters, served as Worshipful Master in 1932, and his grandfather, Charles Henry Wallace, held the same honour in 1953. Both were professional musicians – Llewelyn played bassoon and viola for the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company – and the musical legacy continues: Terry’s son now plays Llewelyn’s antique viola with the Fulham Symphony Orchestra.

Filling the Lodge with Music and Light

When Terry joined Purcell Lodge, he noticed one thing missing – an organist! True to form, he set about fixing that. He donated a PA system, created a Purcell Songbook, and even recorded a CD of Geordie sing-alongs to brighten the festive board. His love of music and technology also led him to create computerised accompaniments for the opening and closing odes, The Master’s Song, and a specially written Purcell Chorus.

57 Years of Service and Song

At the recent meeting, Terry – now serving as Junior Warden – gave an insightful explanation of the Second Degree Tracing Board before a very special presentation.
W. Bro. David Southern PSGD, Assistant Provincial Grand Master, accompanied by W. Bro. Stuart Urwin, Provincial Assistant Director of Ceremonies, presented Terry with a certificate marking 57 years of service to Freemasonry.

W. Bro. Terry Compton honoured for 57 years of Freemasonry at Purcell Lodge.

The afternoon concluded exactly as Terry would have wished – with laughter, good company, and plenty of singing at the festive board. It was a fitting celebration of a man whose dedication, creativity, and friendship continue to inspire all who know him.

Congratulations, W. Bro. Terry Compton, on 57 remarkable years in Freemasonry – and thank you for filling our lodges with music, friendship, and light.
