For most, 1st April is a day for light-hearted jokes and playful tricks. However, for many young people across the Province of Northumberland, it was a day filled with excitement, laughter, and the unmistakable rumble of motorcycles delivering Easter joy.
Now in its sixteenth year, the Widows Sons Masonic Bikers Association Northumbria Easter Egg Run continues to be one of the most uplifting examples of Freemasonry in action within the community. This cherished annual event, mirrored by Widows Sons Chapters across the country, is made possible through the continued generosity and support of Lodges throughout the Province.

The day began at the Percy Hedley Centre in Forest Hall, where older pupils were treated to a spectacular arrival of gleaming motorcycles. The atmosphere was electric, with cheers and excitement as the riders entered the grounds. Pupils were invited to meet the bikers, receive Easter eggs, and—perhaps most memorably—sit on the motorcycles themselves, creating moments of pure joy.
The second visit took the group to the Percy Hedley Centre in Jesmond, opposite the Town Moor. This centre, which supports younger pupils—many of whom have hearing impairments—provided particularly moving moments. By sitting on the bikes and feeling the vibrations of revving engines, the children experienced sound in a unique and powerful way. Their reactions were nothing short of remarkable, and the visit remains a highlight of the year for both pupils and riders alike. Notably, this was the very first centre visited by the Widows Sons back in 2010, and it continues to hold a special place in the hearts of all involved.

Following a well-earned break, the final stop of the day was Hexham Priory School. Once again, the arrival of the bikes was met with enthusiasm and delight. The school, which has previously benefited from the donation of specialist tricycles by the Widows Sons, demonstrated the lasting impact of the Association’s charitable work, with the equipment still very much in use and enjoyed by the pupils.
The Widows Sons Easter Egg Run stands as a shining example of Freemasonry’s commitment to supporting local communities. The Association extends its sincere thanks to all Lodges and Brethren whose generous contributions made it possible to provide such a special day for hundreds of children across Northumberland.
For those Brethren who share a passion for motorcycling, the Widows Sons Masonic Bikers Association offers a unique opportunity to combine fellowship with charitable purpose. With Chapters in over 95 countries, it is the largest and most successful Masonic motorcycle association in the world.
Smiles all round as pupils engage with the visiting bikers.
