On 4th September 2024, the Ashington Chapter No. 2868 celebrated a momentous occasion—its 100-year anniversary—with a special visit from Most Excellent Grand Superintendent Ian Craigs, Deputy Grand Superintendent Philippe Pagès, and other co-principals and provincial chapter officers. The event was a significant milestone in the chapter’s rich history, marking a century of service, brotherhood, and dedication to Royal Arch Masonry in Northumberland.
A Century of History
Founded in 1919, Ashington Chapter was formed after a meeting of Past Masters and Companions of Ashington Lodge No. 2868, who expressed a desire to establish a Royal Arch Chapter attached to their Lodge. By 25th November 1919, the Chapter had been officially consecrated in Newcastle’s Masonic Hall, with Ex. Comp. Robert Dickinson as its first Z, Ex. Comp. Robert Beadnell as the first H, and Ex. Comp. Frederic Wiseman as J.
The chapter’s journey has been marked by growth and resilience, particularly through significant historical moments such as World War II and the more recent global Covid-19 pandemic, which delayed the centenary celebrations from their originally planned date in 2019.
Celebrating the Chapter’s Legacy
The Provincial visit was a fitting tribute to the Chapter’s enduring legacy. Hosted at Ashington’s current Masonic Hall, where it has resided since 1929, the celebration was both a reflection of the Chapter’s past achievements and a recognition of the community it has fostered over the years. Grand Superintendent Ian Craigs addressed the Companions, acknowledging the remarkable history of Ashington Chapter and its continued contribution to Royal Arch Masonry.
During the celebration, Grand Superintendent Ian Craigs and co-principals paid homage to the Chapter’s founders and longstanding members, including Ex. Comp. John Warham and Ex. Comp. Colin Hume, both of whom have held key offices and were invested by HRH the Duke of Kent KG, the Most Excellent First Grand Principal, for their unwavering commitment to Freemasonry.
Looking Forward
As the chapter enters its next century, the event served not only as a moment to honor its history but also to look forward to its future. The Ashington Chapter, known for its family-friendly environment and long-standing traditions, remains a pillar of the Royal Arch community. The continued participation of its members, along with new generations of Companions, ensures that the Chapter’s legacy will endure for many more years to come.
With a century of fellowship, learning, and dedication behind them, the Ashington Chapter and its Companions now look ahead to the challenges and opportunities that await in the next hundred years.
Long may Ashington Royal Arch Chapter prosper!
