W.Bro Greg Smith was appointed as Assistant Provincial Grand Master earlier this year. In the first of our ‘Get to know the Provincial Executive’ series, we sat down with Greg shortly after his investiture to find out a bit more about our newest member of the Provincial Executive team.
Greg was born in Northumberland. Outside of Freemasonry, Greg had a varied career, serving as an officer in the Army before moving into teaching then senior education leadership.
After W.Bro Greg graduated from Sandhurst he served as an Officer in the Parachute Regiment for more than a decade. Greg’s career in the Army took him all over the world serving in Northern Ireland, Falklands, Cyprus, India, Belize and Hong Kong.
After a distinguished career as an Officer, W. Bro Greg left the Army to return to University. He achieved a BA (Hons) and a Masters Degree and went on to complete PhD in Education.

Holy Royal Arch Chapter
Exalted into The Holy Royal Arch Chapter and is a founding member of Farne RAC 5228.
1997
Worshipful Master – Viking Lodge7934
Installed as Worshipful Master of Viking Lodge.

Takes on role of ME Z in Farne RAC 5228.

Provincial Honours
In 2005, receives Provincial Honours of Past Provincial Senior Grand Deacon

Scribe E.
Took up the office of Scribe E. of Farne RAC 5228 and continues to carry out this office today!
2009
RAC Provincial Honors
Receives first provincial honour in the Royal Arch Chapter in 2009 as Grand Registrar .

Provincial Promotion
Promoted to Provincial Junior Grand Warden for the Province of Northumberland
2012
Grand Lodge Honors
Honoured in the Craft with an appointment of Past Assistant Grand Director of Ceremonies in United Grand Lodge of England.
2017
Second Provincial Grand Principal
Appointed to Second Provincial Grand Principal in 2017.
2018
Assistant Provincial Grand Master
WBro Greg is invested at a special meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge held at Newminster Lodge 5328 in Morpeth Masonic Hall with over 100 brethren from 23 lodges in attendance.
2018
Joins Perfect Ashlar
W Bro Dr. Greg Smith joins Perfect Ashlar Lodge 7966.
Greg taught at a few Educational establishments across the region; before moving to a senior leadership role as a Director at Newcastle College from 2000 to 2010. In 2010 Greg was appointed as Vice Principal of Newcastle College, a role he held until retirement in June 2015. Greg still works as Her Majesty’s Inspector for Education for OfSTED.
Outside of Freemasonry, W. Bro Greg enjoys shooting and working on his family Farm in Northumberland.
